Gantry Cranes Australia — Workshop, Portal & Mobile

A gantry crane is a self-supporting overhead crane: it doesn't need the building to carry it. If you're working in an open yard, a facility with no overhead structure, or a building where adding runway to the roof isn't feasible, a gantry is the right approach. We design, supply and install gantry cranes nationally, across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and regional sites.

We supply workshop gantry cranes, fixed portal cranes and mobile gantry cranes from 500 kg to 6 t, engineered and designed to applicable AS/ISO standards.

Workshop gantry crane

The most common gantry configuration in Australian fabrication shops, mechanical workshops and maintenance facilities. A workshop gantry crane gives you full overhead lifting without loading the building structure. This is useful in leased premises, low-clearance sheds, or facilities where adding crane columns isn't viable. We supply both fixed-rail workshop gantries and adjustable-height portable units, with electric chain hoists or wire rope hoists matched to your duty cycle. Common configurations: 1 t / 2 t / 3.2 t / 5 t with 4–8 m spans.

Fixed portal crane

A permanent gantry structure on fixed rails or concrete. Suitable for outdoor yards, precast concrete operations, container handling, and heavy maintenance areas. Designed and specified to your span and capacity requirement.

Mobile gantry crane

Portable, height-adjustable gantry on castored legs. Ideal for maintenance facilities, workshops, and sites where the crane needs to move between locations. Electric hoist and motorised travel options available.

Technical specifications

  • Capacity: 500 kg to 6 t
  • Span: specified to your requirement
  • Legs: fixed, collapsible, or height-adjustable
  • Travel: manual push, motorised, or rail-mounted
  • Compliance: designed to applicable AS/ISO standards.

When a gantry beats an overhead

An overhead bridge crane needs runway beams supported by either the building or dedicated crane columns. If neither is feasible (leased premises, low-clearance buildings, outdoor yards), a gantry is structurally simpler and often substantially cheaper. For coastal and outdoor environments, we specify hot-dip galvanised structures with stainless fixings, designed for cyclic wind loading to Australian wind-loading standards.

Gantry cranes — Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and nationally

Sorian Cranes supplies and installs gantry cranes across Australia. We work directly with metropolitan customers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and with regional operators in Geelong, Newcastle, Townsville, Mackay and the Hunter Valley among others. Each gantry crane is engineered to suit the destination: coastal sites get galvanised structures and stainless fittings; mining and heavy-industry sites get IP-rated electrics and dust-sealed hoists; food and pharma facilities get washable finishes. National installation is project-managed end-to-end so the crane arrives certified, registered with the relevant state regulator where applicable, and ready to use.

Frequently asked questions about gantry cranes

What's the difference between a gantry crane and an overhead crane?

An overhead bridge crane is suspended from runway beams attached to the building structure. A gantry crane carries its own legs and runs on floor rails or castors, so the building takes no crane load. Gantries are the right choice when the building can't carry an overhead, or when you need a crane in an open yard.

Can a gantry crane be used outdoors?

Yes. Outdoor gantry cranes are specified to Australian wind-loading standards for the destination region, with hot-dip galvanised structures and corrosion-resistant fixings for coastal exposure. Common outdoor applications include precast concrete yards, container handling and bulk storage.

What capacity gantry crane do I need?

Most workshop gantry cranes sit between 1 t and 5 t. We engineer to the heaviest single lift you'll do, with a 25% margin for duty class M3–M5. For applications above 6 t we engineer custom solutions. Send us your application and we'll come back with a recommendation.

Do you supply gantry cranes in [your city]?

Yes. We supply gantry cranes nationally, across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, Canberra and regional sites across Australia. Installation is project-managed from our Melbourne office.

Gantry cranes by city

Sorian Cranes supplies portal A-frame and semi-gantry workshop cranes across Australia. Capacity range covers 500 kg to 6 t standard, with heavier custom designs for outdoor mining and yard work. National install crews from our Melbourne engineering base.

Gantry cranes Brisbane: portal A-frame and semi-gantry workshop cranes for fabrication, mining-services support and outdoor yard handling across Acacia Ridge, Wacol and the southern industrial corridor. Metal fabrication shops typically need 2–5 t portal gantries for plate handling at mobile workstations; mining-services maintenance favours heavier 3–6 t portal designs for outdoor component lay-down; logistics yards at Lytton and Hemmant use semi-gantry runs along loading docks. Cyclone wind loading (AS 1170.2 Region B) applies to outdoor and roller-track gantry designs.

Gantry cranes Melbourne: portal A-frame and semi-gantry workshop cranes for advanced manufacturing, automotive and food processing across the Melbourne metro. Truganina and Laverton manufacturing favours 2–5 t portal gantries for assembly support; Dandenong and Campbellfield automotive shops use mobile portals for engine handling and machinery move-in/out; Tullamarine logistics yards use semi-gantries along container handling lanes. Reactive Werribee clays mean we size wheel loads and runway design to suit the actual yard surface.

Gantry cranes Sydney: portal A-frame and semi-gantry workshop cranes for defence, advanced manufacturing and infrastructure across Sydney metro. Bankstown defence and aerospace work typically uses precision 1–3 t portals in assembly cells; Wetherill Park and Smithfield manufacturing favours 2–5 t portal gantries for sub-assembly and press support; Botany and Ingleburn logistics yards use semi-gantries for container and freight work. Tight Sydney industrial vacancy makes mobile gantries especially valuable for brownfield facilities adding lifting capacity without runway modifications.

Gantry cranes Perth: heavy-duty portal A-frame and semi-gantry cranes for mining-services workshops, oil & gas fabrication and defence shipbuilding across Kewdale, Welshpool, Henderson. Mining maintenance shops typically run 3–6 t portal gantries at higher duty class for outdoor component handling; Henderson oil & gas yards use heavy semi-gantries paired with wire-rope hoists for module assembly; AMC defence shipbuilding uses precision portals in cell-based assembly. Coastal corrosion protection and inland Pilbara service ratings are factored into design.

Gantry cranes Adelaide: portal A-frame and semi-gantry workshop cranes for AUKUS defence shipbuilding, advanced manufacturing and wine-industry equipment across Osborne, Lonsdale and Edinburgh Parks. Osborne shipbuilding subcontractors typically need precision 2–5 t portals in controlled-environment cells; Lonsdale and Edinburgh Parks manufacturing favours 2–5 t portal gantries for assembly work; wine-industry workshops in the Barossa and McLaren Vale use mobile gantries for tank and press positioning. Documentation packs include the design verification statements expected by defence-sector primes.
