How to Choose an Overhead Crane Supplier in Australia

Choosing the crane is one decision. Choosing who supplies it is the one that decides whether it's safe, compliant and right-sized — or an expensive problem at its first inspection. Here's how to tell an engineering-led supplier from a box-shifter, and the questions to ask before you commit.

The real divide: engineered vs catalogue

Most overhead lifting in Australia is sold one of two ways. A reseller takes your rough requirement, picks the nearest standard product from a catalogue — often imported — and ships it. An engineering-led supplier starts from your load, span, duty cycle and building structure, sizes the crane to the relevant Australian Standards, and prices what the job actually needs.

Both can put a working crane in your shed. Only one can show that it was sized for your application and your slab — and that distinction is exactly what a WorkSafe inspector, or a fatigue crack in five years, will surface. The supplier you choose is really a choice about who carries the engineering responsibility for your lifting equipment.

Eight things to check before you buy

  1. Is it engineered for your application, or pulled from a catalogue? Ask whether someone actually calculates the crane for your span, capacity and duty cycle — or simply matches you to a standard model.
  2. Who signs off the design? A qualified mechanical engineer should be responsible. For higher-risk plant, sign-off may need a Chartered engineer (CPEng) or, in Queensland, an RPEQ.
  3. Compliance to AS 1418 and AS 2550. AS 1418 governs crane design; AS 2550 governs safe use. A good supplier references both and specifies the correct duty class (A1–A8) for how hard you'll work the crane.
  4. WorkSafe / plant design registration. Above set thresholds — in Victoria, gantry cranes over 5 t and bridge cranes over 10 t — the design must be registered with the regulator before use. Ask whether they handle the registration and supply the number.
  5. The documentation pack. You should receive design calculations, an O&M manual, compliance certification and, where required, the design-registration documents. If you can't get the calculations, you can't prove the crane is fit for purpose.
  6. Installation and commissioning. Confirm who installs it, whether commissioning and load testing are included, and that you receive a handover certificate.
  7. Lifecycle support. A crane needs routine and 10-yearly major inspections under AS 2550, plus spare parts. A supplier who also services is one who'll still be there in year six.
  8. Right-sizing, not over-selling. Oversizing is the lazy way to de-risk a sale at your expense. The right supplier sizes to the work — with no margin built into capacity you'll never use.

Questions to ask any supplier

Copy these into your next enquiry. The answers separate the engineers from the resellers quickly.

  • Who will calculate and sign off the design, and what are their qualifications?
  • Which edition of AS 1418 are you designing to, and what duty class are you specifying for my use?
  • Does my crane need WorkSafe design registration, and will you handle it?
  • What's included in the documentation pack at handover?
  • Are installation, commissioning and load testing included in the price?
  • Do you service and inspect the equipment you supply?
  • What's the lead time, and what specifically drives it?

Red flags

  • A fixed quote with no site visit and no questions about your slab, structure or duty cycle.
  • No engineering calculations available, even on request.
  • Vague compliance language — "meets Australian Standards" — with no specific standard, edition or duty class.
  • No mention of design registration where your capacity clearly triggers it.
  • Pressure to upsize "to be safe" without an engineering reason.

A note on price

The cheapest quote and the dearest quote are often for different cranes — different duty class, different steel, different compliance scope. Compare like for like: same capacity, same duty class, same documentation and installation scope. A correctly sized crane with a full compliance pack frequently costs less over its life than a cheaper, oversized import that fails an inspection or wears out early. Get the scope on paper before you compare the numbers.
