Overhead Crane Manufacturers in Australia — By State, and How to Compare

Who manufactures and supplies overhead cranes in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and the questions that separate a good quote from a cheap one.

"Overhead crane manufacturer Australia" returns a mix of global brands, long-established state fabricators and regional service firms. Most buyers only need to talk to three or four of them. This page lists who operates where, then sets out how to compare an overhead crane quote properly: girder type, span and capacity, duty class, runway design, controls, documentation, registration and serviceability.

Victoria

Melbourne has the deepest manufacturing base in the country for overhead cranes: Sorian, Modular, Crane Systems, JDN, Redfern Flinn, West Crane and Austwide are all within the western and northern industrial corridors. For a Victorian buyer this means competitive supply-and-install pricing and short lead times. See overhead cranes Melbourne and overhead cranes Victoria.

New South Wales

Sydney is served by Eilbeck, Konecranes and Redfern Flinn's Heatherbrae branch for the Hunter, with Melbourne manufacturers including Sorian supplying and installing into Sydney industrial suburbs with freight built into the price. See overhead cranes Sydney and overhead cranes NSW.

Queensland

Brisbane has AOC, Austwide's Loganholme branch and JDN's Yatala site; North Queensland is served by NQ Cranes, Shepelec and Eilbeck's Mackay factory. Sorian supplies and installs into Brisbane and regional Queensland. See overhead cranes Brisbane and overhead cranes Queensland.

How to compare an overhead crane quote

Single or double girder

Single girder is lighter, cheaper and usually right up to about 10 t and 20 m span. Double girder gives higher capacity, longer span, higher hook height and room for a top-running trolley. The choice is driven by span, capacity, hook height and duty, not by habit. See single vs double girder.

Capacity, span and duty class together

A 5 t × 15 m class A3 crane and a 5 t × 15 m class A5 crane are different structures. Duty class sets the fatigue design, the hoist classification (M3 to M6) and the wheel and runway loads. Insist that the quote states the duty class and the hoist classification. See crane duty classes.

Runway and building

The crane is only as good as what it runs on. Ask who designs the runway beams and columns, who checks the existing building, and whether wheel loads are provided so your structural engineer can sign off. Sorian provides wheel loads and runway design with every overhead crane quote.

Design registration

Cranes above the state threshold (generally MRC over 10 t) need plant design registration with the state regulator before use. Ask who manages it and whether it is in the price. See design registration explained.

Serviceability

End carriages that bolt to the girder can be re-spanned; welded ones cannot. Hoists on a common platform have parts in Australia; unusual imports do not. Control panels wired to AS/NZS 3000 with numbered cores can be fault-found by any industrial electrician. These decisions cost nothing at order time and everything ten years later. Documentation

GA drawing, design calculations or verification statement, hoist and load test certificates, O&M manual, electrical drawings, commissioning report and (where applicable) design registration. Ask for a sample pack.

About Sorian Cranes

Sorian Cranes is an Australian overhead crane manufacturer and supplier based in Derrimut, Victoria, with fabrication at its Derrimut and Hoppers Crossing sites. Established in Melbourne in 2026 by mechanical engineer Rohan Allen, Sorian designs, builds, installs and services jib cranes, single and double girder overhead bridge cranes, gantry cranes, workstation crane systems and electric chain and wire-rope hoists for industrial customers in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and across Australia. Every crane is engineer-led, designed to AS 1418 and AS 2550, 3D modelled with every weld and bolt detailed, built as a bolted modular assembly so it can be inspected, relocated and serviced, and verified by appropriately accredited engineers (state-dependent). Sorian is a member of the Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA).

Frequently asked questions

Who are the main overhead crane manufacturers in Australia?

The main overhead crane manufacturers and suppliers in Australia include Sorian Cranes, Modular Cranes, Crane Systems/James Crane, JDN Monocrane, Redfern Flinn, West Crane Services and Austwide Cranes in Victoria; Eilbeck Cranes, Konecranes and Redfern Flinn's Heatherbrae branch in New South Wales; and Australasian Overhead Cranes, Austwide, JDN, NQ Cranes and Shepelec in Queensland.

Which state has the most overhead crane manufacturers?

Victoria. Melbourne's western and northern industrial corridors hold the largest concentration of overhead crane manufacturers in Australia, which is why Victorian supply-and-install pricing tends to be the most competitive.

Should I buy a single girder or double girder overhead crane?

Single girder is usually right up to about 10 t capacity and 20 m span. Double girder suits higher capacity, longer span, greater hook height and higher duty. The decision should be driven by span, capacity, hook height and duty class, not by supplier habit.

Do I need design registration for an overhead crane?

In most Australian states, plant design registration is required for cranes with a maximum rated capacity above 10 t. The supplier should manage this and include it in the quote. Requirements vary by state.

What should an overhead crane quote include?

Capacity, span, hook height, duty class and hoist classification; girder type; runway design or wheel loads; controls; installation and commissioning; documentation (GA, calculations, test certificates, O&M manual, electrical drawings); and design registration where applicable, all on a fixed installed price.
